Getting Started: Students

Welcome to Blackbelt Japanese, the automated video chat website.

Step 1: Sign up

If you haven’t already done so, follow one of the links on our home page to sign up.

Step 2: Get your classmates to sign up

Blackbelt Japanese is more fun to use if your whole class uses it, because you can compare your progress on the Lesson Scoreboard and Vocab Scoreboard.

Make sure your teacher has signed up too. (Teachers can use the site for free).

Step 3: Tell your teacher your login details

Your teacher needs your email address and password to add you to the class.

Step 4: Start practicing!

“My Lessons” is where you'll see the Lesson Scoreboard, and the lessons for your class. You can also use lessons from the other levels included in your subscription.

“My Vocab” is where you'll find the Vocab Scoreboard, class vocab drills, and your personal vocab drills.

Custom vocab lists

Your teacher may set up custom lists of vocab for your class.

You can make your own personal lists too. See the help for “Custom Vocab Lists” for details of how to make and edit vocab lists.

Have fun!

We hope you enjoy using Blackbelt Japanese. Please feel free to leave comments in the “Comments” area below each lesson, or contact us to tell us what you think.

Real Japanese.
It’s casual Japanese,
but not slang.
